librarything meme

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
from [info]redcat9.  there are a lot of books that i started and didn't finish!  time to get on that.
These are the top 106 books most often marked as "unread" by LibraryThing's users. Meme directions: bold what you have read, italicize what you started but couldn't/didn't finish, and strike through what you couldn't stand. The numbers after each one are the number of LT users who used the tag of that book.

spam

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I got a spam today with the following formula for subject:

[FirstName], we have good new for [College], [Major] students!

So, for example, "John, we have good news for Columbia, Biology students!" flows nicely.

"Lisa, we have good news for Massachusettes Institute of Technology, Program in Science, Technology, and Society students!" does not have the same ring.

Shakespeare Meme

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
(When you see this on your friends list, quote some Shakespeare.)

The barge she sat in, like a burnish'd throne,
Burn'd on the water: the poop was beaten gold;
Purple the sails, and so perfumed that
The winds were love-sick with them; the oars were silver,
Which to the tune of flutes kept stroke, and made
The water which they beat to follow faster,
As amorous of their strokes.

I, like redcat9, am most fond of lines i've gotten to speak. This is from Antony and Cleopatra, spoken by Enobarbus. This is a fun passage because (1) it's full of inuendo and (2) I got to say "poop".

Will Ferrell

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I had a double header of Will Ferrell movies today (can you tell I handed in a massive paper?)

Blades of Glory was ok. It was a mix of Zoolander and The Cutting Edge, but not necessarily a good mix. watch it on video.

Stranger than Fiction, on the other hand, was Fantastic. Wow. I've been trying to explain what we've been doing in my social theory class (post structuralism) - this movie is a great example of poststructuralism/mostmodernism. loved it.

our town

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
oh, and i actually want to see sheib's our town.

anyone want to go with me either this saturday or next saturday?

asteroids

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
does anyone know the name of the nasa mission (satellite?) responsible for looking for asteroids that might be on a collision course with earth? or am i making this up?

i'm having a debate with my uncle. my five year old cousin became petrified that he was going to die in his sleep from an asteroid hitting the earth. i reassured him that nasa is on top of that. now, i know that this is not entirely true, that the whole sky is not being monitored, but i figured for a five year old such a white lie would be ok. but my uncle doesn't believe that there is any such thing. help me prove him wrong :)

and this is awesome. i came across it during an image search for pluto:

Wake up at 7. (drink coffee)
Get right to work on finishing up Draft 1 of my Pluto paper (we're at 26 pages folks, sans pictures)
Submit electronically by noon.
Celebratory viewing of Blades of Glory
Get cracking on social theory reading

third post of the day

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Today my grandparents and cousins are coming over for our Nth annual family St. Patrick's Day feast, prepared by my mom, complete with cornbeef and bacon/cabbage sides.

Please post in comments the number of things you notice that are completely bizarre about this event.

two things of note

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
(1) I've been meaning to post this one for awhile. It is probably one of the funniest moments of TV I've ever seen (it's from Extras, with ricky gervais)

http://youtube.com/watch?v=JqjHedvAnDY

(2) A friend i went to summer jew camp with had a wedding announcement in the NYT. Now, i have occassionally known people in the wedding section (recent example, my advisor), but this is the first time it's my generation. I'm feeling behind.

rock climbing is for lovers

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I've been taking the top-rope rock climbing class as a PE. We go once a week out to metro rock in everett and climb for 3 hours. It is amazingly fun. My biggest challenges are (1) getting over my fear of heights and (2) getting over my lack of muscles. This week I made a huge break through in both areas. Because it's a PE, we get lessons. so, yesterday we worked on foot work and shifting your body weight. instead of just scrambling up the wall like with your belly to it, must of the time your hips should be turned into the wall. this gives incredible leverage and started making climbs that i couldn't do last week possible! I had such a good time, and am so (pleasantly) sore today.

just wanted to share :)

and, yay weather! this means i can start running outside again. wow, this post makes me sound so athletic. don't worry, i eat greasy foods like no ones business. blech.

turtles all the way down

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
"BLANK all the way down" seems to be a favored turn of phrase in social theory readings. "Turtles all the way down" originates in Hawkings "A brief history of time" ...

"A well-known scientist (some say it was Bertrand Russell) once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the Earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the centre of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy.
At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: "What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise."
The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, "What is the tortoise standing on?"
"You're very clever, young man, very clever," said the old lady. "But it's turtles all the way down!""

I like this notion, and so do other people. when we were talking about contract theory, one author described social arangments as "contracts all the way down". right now, i just read about mauss referencing durkheim referencing tocqueville, referencing Rousseau, which the author equates to "french elephants all the way down".

i can't think of the other instances, but they are everywhere. Was it in the little prince? (which would pre-date hawking) i vaguely remember something about an elephant, but my copy appears to be in new jersey.
